Massive Attack - Heligoland : 2010

At this point in a career as long as Massive Attacks' things have come full circle when ideas are fresh and everything is in it's right place. 100th window I admit was a bit of a hard listen for me, and it took a few more to adjust to.. but like that piece of clothing you couldn't fit into when you first bought it but you kept it around anyway, you find it and try it on again-only to be reminded of how uncomfortable it still is.

Heligoland brings back that solid concept album that is so rare to find these days. I'm convinced that some of us, can still appreciate an album from beginning to end, like it was meant to be - not just cherry picking the singles... you can still do that, but not without losing the power this album holds. The opener 'Pray for Rain', while a very simple and possibly overused title for a song, describes a moment that could be a terrorist attack, (a still... very prevalent topic as we come into the second decade) or referencing the city of Sodom & Gomorrah"

...A shattered cloud of swirling doves, and their eyes change, as they learn to see through flames, and their necks crane, as they turn to pray for rain..."

The album drives patiently in this way and takes a smooth turn into Horace Andy's auto-tuned 'Girl I Love You', picking things up with the familiarity of the darkness and womb-like warmth of Mezzanine. I'm pretty sure, that nothing will define the sound of, or bring us into 2010 more appropriately, than Heligoland, and Massive Attack does that without even trying!
