Aloha 'Home Acres' (Polyvinyl Record Co.)

Aloha's fifth album, takes a more refined approach with Home Acres. Tony Cavallario's vocals weave these tales of anxiety with meticulously thought out arrangements and necessary ornamentation. Distance doesn't prevent them from constructing powerful melodies, which reinforces my determination to get back to my band again.

White Hinterland 'Kairos' (Dead Oceans)

Dead Oceans does it again! I swear, I can't expect anything but top notch quality from these guys. Last Weeks Phosphorescent is an album that clearly puts Dead Oceans on the list of quality record labels. White Hinterland keeps the labels pulse at 100. A soft serene beat and calm wave of glittery fresh air. The look of the album cover says it all. Think something like 'School of Seven Bells' meets 'Koushik'.

Burning Star Core 'Papercuts Theater"(No Quarter)

There is a fine line between Art and Noise. My start in experimental noise was with Premature Ejaculation. Its' atmosphere, its' texture and it offers something that is not accessible to the masses so-- its similar to disappearing into a windowless dive bar at 7 in the morning. Papercuts Theater is 60+ minutes of sonic bleakness that creeps through after hour streets like a dense fog. Dramatic stuff!

"Papercuts Theater has been years in the making, a penultimate statement of sorts, a collage of 66 live recordings spanning 2003 to present, edited and assembled by C. Spencer Yeh and featuring frequent Burning Star Core collaborators: Trevor Tremaine, Mike Shiflet, Robert Beatty, Lambsbread and more. The 2xLP comes packaged in a classic "tip-on" (ie. highest quality) gatefold jacket and includes an mp3 version of the album. The CD ain't too shabby either, packaged in a custom die-cut digipak. Both were designed by Paul Romano."  No Quarter

Dusted did a review on these guys too and you can hear a track from Papercuts Theater.
/flashplayer/player.swf  Last week Yellow Swans released 'Going Places'. A similar sound. You can listen to the (rumored to be final) full album here.
